DIRECTOR of OPERATIONS: BLUENOSE II

and BLUENOSE II COMPANY STORE

Bluenose ll Mission:

  • To continuously promote the history and legacy of Bluenose and Bluenose II as well as the rich past and present of Lunenburg and Atlantic Canada.
  • To teach and promote seamanship and life skills in young Canadians through the opportunity of serving onboard Bluenose II. To operate Bluenose II in a safe and efficient manner so that all Canadians may be proud.
  • To maintain and ensure Bluenose II will serve as a sailing ambassador for Lunenburg, the Province of Nova Scotia and Canada.

Bluenose II is operated by the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society, a non-profit organization that operates the Bluenose II and the Bluenose II Company Store and the schooner Bluenose II on behalf of the Province of Nova Scotia..

BLUENOSE II is a replica of the original BLUENOSE, which was built in 1921 in Lunenburg. BLUENOSE II was built in 1963 and is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Lunenburg Marine Museum Society (LMMS) is responsible for the operation of the BLUENOSE II and BLUENOSE II Company Store. Safety of the vessel and all those aboard including officers, crew and passengers is the primary consideration.

It is the vision of the BLUENOSE II to be a leader in the tall ship world. As an ambassador vessel for the Province of Nova Scotia and as an icon for Canada (represented on the Canadian dime), BLUENOSE II will endeavor to represent the past, present and future. Using local, provincial, and federal partnerships, BLUENOSE II will be a symbol of excellence, and an icon for the nation.

 

POSITION SUMMARY / OVERVIEW

The Director of Operations, BLUENOSE II is a full-time position, located in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and responsible for overall planning and management of the vessel within the parameters of the operating contract between LMMS and the Province of Nova Scotia and in accordance with strategic direction, as set out by the LMMS Board of Directors.

The Director of Operations is hired by and reports to the LMMS Board of Directors through the LMMS President.

The vessel Captain reports directly to this position as does the Shore Crew, and the Director of Operations assistant. The Director of Operations works very closely with the BNII Financial Manager.

The position is responsible for revenue generation which includes the operation of the BLUENOSE II Company Store (including staffing) and will include the overall management of the BLUENOSE II building that houses the BLUENOSE II Store, offices, and currently two commercial leases (1 seasonal).

This position is the chief liaison with the Province of Nova Scotia, owner of the vessel, and is also responsible to work towards the elements in the recently completed Strategic Plan.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Vessel Operations:

  • Ensure appropriate procedures are in place, enforced and complied with for safety and well being of vessel and all those aboard
  • Ensure vessel, officers and crew meet all required regulatory Transport Canada and ABS compliances, Develop and implement the Marine Safety Management System as per Transport Canada Regulation TP15566(06/24)
  • Develop and update with Captain and Chief Engineer seasonal maintenance, repair plans and long-term maintenance plans. Oversee same along with annual ABS inspection.
  • Maintain current records both onboard and onshore
  • Manage contracts and contractors
  • First point of contact in the event of any vessel emergencies
  • Ensure all necessary shore services are available at all times
  • Ensure security and regular monitoring of vessel during winter layup

FINANCIAL:

  • Plan, prepare and review annual operating plans and financial budgets for vessel, store, and building for the LMMS Board of Directors approval.
  • Prepare and Monitor Cash Flow Statements
  • Source additional funds as required
  • Work with LMMS Auditor as required

BLUENOSE II Store Operations & Mobile Exhibit:

  • Oversee store and mobile exhibit operations (both financial and Human Resources) with the Senior Shore Crew.

BUILDING MANAGEMENT:

  • Manage the Building that currently houses the BLUENOSE II offices, Bluenose II store and commercial leases.

HUMAN RESOURCES:

  • Oversee hiring and training of vessel officers, on-board crew, and onshore staff
  • Ensure all Human Resource current practices and procedures are reviewed yearly and comply with all regulatory requirements
  • Development of succession plans for officers and store management.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and review existing systems, develop, and implement new systems, policies and procedures ensuring compliance for all operations under Director of Operations responsibilities
  • Develop and implement approved annual operating plan and schedule for vessel
  • Develop annual operating financial budgets and plans for vessel and store operations and building to maximize revenue
  • Prepare bi-weekly operating reports for LMMS Board of Directors
  • As first point of contact the Director of Operations is accountable for current and up to date Crisis Management Procedures and communication of same to all appropriate parties
  • Update and maintain Vessel Management system with accurate records and activity of decisions

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communicate and work regularly with all partners including Nova Scotia Government departments in development of the vessel’s schedule, budgets, plans, promotions, and advertising
  • Work with Communications Consultant regarding all communications requests
  • Serve as active member of the LMMS/BLUENOSE II committee
  • Collaborate with the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic management and staff to optimize opportunities to add value to both operations.
  • Represent the vessel at public events as required and assist store staff in maximizing sales
  • Attend monthly LMMS Board of Director meetings/special meetings as required
  • Such other responsibilities as may be requested by the LMMS Board of Directors

The Director of Operations, BLUENOSE II and BLUENOSE II Company Store position operates out of the Bluenose II Building in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The Director is required to attend the vessel, when necessary, at ports of call in Nova Scotia and farther afield, and occasionally travel to trade shows and conferences. Familiarity and some level of sea going training is required.

 

Normal Vessel Operations: Sailing Season - April 01, to October 15

Winter Lay-up – October 16, to March 31

 

Work hours will vary, with the sailing season. When BLUENOSE II is sailing, the Director of Operations is expected to be available at all times, on site or via phone. Winter lay-up hours are for the most part regular work week (M-F) always dependent on weather and maintenance – after hours may be required, while available by phone at all times.

  • Familiarity with Marine Safety Management System
  • Good physical condition. Physical demands – stairs and walking, long days standing on wharf in all weather, catching lines
  • Position performance and salary reviews provided on an annual basis by LMMS Board.
  • The LMMS Code of Conduct will be required to be signed and complied with by the successful candidate.
