Chief Engineer – Bluenose II

Bluenose II is a Canadian icon and Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador. The ship travels around the Maritime provinces and beyond promoting the history of the Atlantic fishery and acting as a tourist destination to the ports she visits.

This is a year-round position based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. You will be required to work every day during the sailing season, from April 1 until October 15. Through the off-season (October 16 to March 31) you will be required to attend to the vessel once per week for monitoring and once per month to run machinery.

The vessel’s schedule varies from year to year. The vessel usually spends a good portion of the season in Lunenburg sailing on harbour cruises with passengers. On cruise days and maintenance days in Lunenburg, you are not required to live aboard. When the vessel is away from Lunenburg, living aboard is required.

Bluenose II is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia and operated by the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society. 

Requirements

  • Fourth-class Engineer, at a minimum
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be able to pass a Transport Canada Seafarers’ Medical
  • Hold a valid Canadian passport that will not expire within the current year
  • Be professional, respectful, and able to interact with passengers and crew from all backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintenance and safe operation of all mechanical equipment and machinery which includes two John Deere diesel engines of 330hp each, all electrical, heating, fresh- and salt-water systems, plumbing, ventilation, sewage systems, electronics, emergency deck pump, shore power, hydraulics, windlass and capstan
  • Comply with all rules and regulations set out by Transport Canada, ABS, IMO, port state authorities and the vessel owner and operator
  • Comply with the vessel’s Safety Management System and participate in its continuous improvement
  • Frequent, proactive inspections of equipment and machinery
  • Record keeping as required by regulations and on-board practice
  • Order and maintain engine room supplies
  • Maintain good working relationships with suppliers and contractors
  • With the Captain and Director of Operations, develop and carry out short- and long-term maintenance plans
  • Provide a monthly report to the Captain and Director of Operations which documents repairs and maintenance, consumption of fuel and lube oil, and work anticipated in the upcoming month
  • Continuously promote Bluenose II and what it stands for, and promote Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and Canada
  • Engage with the public and answer any and all questions that visitors may have relating to the Bluenose II
  • Participate in emergency training and drills
  • Be prepared to participate in a physically demanding job in various weather conditions

This is a paid position. Room and board are provided on board during the season.
